We Need You

Volunteer today.

When a child faces the types of challenges that our Dreamers encounter every day – poverty, hunger, incarceration and immigration issues, just to name a few – life can be daunting. So offering responsible, dedicated individuals to help them both in and out of school is a priceless contribution. If you can commit to being a role model our Dreamers, CIHAD needs your help as a mentor or tutor.

What is a CIHAD tutor?

A CIHAD tutor works with Dreamers after school. While younger Dreamers will have a structured, group-oriented, after-school program, older Dreamers require more one-on-one help. The role of the tutor is to assist the Dreamer with homework, provide positive reinforcement and serve as a role model. All volunteers are trained and receive ongoing support from CIHAD. Tutors commit to at least one to two hours per week for a minimum of one school semester.

What is a CIHAD mentor?

A CIHAD mentor is a positive, adult role model who meets one-on-one with the same Dreamer for an extended period of time providing guidance, support and encouragement. Under the supervision of a program director, the mentor-Dreamer relationship begins with an initial pairing at either the student’s home or a location in his/her community. The program director, mentor and Dreamer will review and evaluate the relationship on an on-going basis.
Responsibilities of a mentor:

  • Establish a relationship with the Dreamer for one year
  • Spend eight to 12 hours a month with the Dreamer
  • Be a positive role model!
  • Plan and schedule age-appropriate activities
  • Provide the Dreamer with exposure to professional work situations

Goals of a mentor:

  • Keep Dreamers in school
  • Help Dreamers progress academically
  • Expand Dreamers’ horizons through exposure to new experiences
